The Polo Bar

The Polo Bar is Ralph Lauren’s flagship restaurant in New York, tucked just off Fifth Avenue and designed as a living expression of the brand’s world. Think wood-panelled walls, deep green accents, equestrian art everywhere and caramel leather banquettes under soft, flattering light. It’s more clubby townhouse than typical Midtown dining room. It feels deliberately timeless and intimate, with a handsome bar at street level and a main dining room below.

The mood is polished but warm rather than stiff. Staff are highly drilled yet friendly, the pacing is unhurried, and details are obsessive – from the glassware and silver to the monogrammed napkins and old-school martini service. It’s a room that works as comfortably for a smart business dinner as it does for a celebratory evening in the city.

What to expect

n terms of food, expect elevated American classics with a steakhouse edge: chilled seafood, crab cakes, wedge salads, burgers, chops and grilled fish, plus indulgent sides and nostalgic desserts. Portions are generous, presentation is elegant but not fussy, and there’s a clear emphasis on consistency and comfort over trend-driven cooking. The cocktail list leans classic and strong, and the wine programme is serious, with plenty of by-the-glass options for mixing and matching over a long dinner.

The overall experience is meant to feel like an evening “inside the brand”: candlelit, flattering and slightly cocooned from the city outside. Noise levels rise as the room fills; it’s lively and social rather than hushed, so ideal if you want atmosphere and people-watching with your martini rather than a library-quiet table. Service is attentive and closely managed, and repeat guests are remembered.
