Carbone London
Carbone London is the long-awaited European outpost of New York’s cult Italian-American restaurant, now open in the heart of Mayfair at 30 Grosvenor Square. Housed within the historic former US Embassy building, it brings Manhattan’s most talked-about “red sauce” dining room to one of London’s most prestigious addresses.
Created by Major Food Group’s Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick, the restaurant pays homage to the great Italian-American institutions of 1950s New York – the kind of places where the lighting is low, the martinis are cold and the evening feels a little bit cinematic. Expect white tablecloths, velvet banquettes, mosaic floors and a gallery-worthy collection of contemporary art, all spread over multiple dining rooms, lounges and a private dining suite.
What to expect
The menu is a greatest-hits line-up of Carbone signatures. Classics such as Caesar alla ZZ, Octopus Pizzaiolo, Spicy Rigatoni Vodka, Veal Parmesan and indulgent house lasagna are rendered with serious technique and top-tier ingredients. Desserts are theatrically presented on a roaming tray, inviting guests to choose from the night’s selection at the table.
Service is very much part of the show. Burgundy tuxedo-clad captains orchestrate the room with old-school charm and a spirit of abbondanza – generous portions, tableside preparations and a “have whatever you like” philosophy printed right on the menu: A Piacere (“As You Like It”).
It’s polished yet playful, designed for celebrations, date nights and high-energy dinners with friends or clients.
